Shana Morrison, The Fletcher Christian, Cockermouth
Tuesday, July 25She has played with Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker and Dr John at some of America’s top venues and festivals. And last night Shana Morrison, daughter of the legendary Van Morrison, came to play in a pub in Cockermouth.
Despite the soaring temperatures, about 200 people packed into The Fletcher Christian for a gig they’ll be talking about for years to come. The crowd couldn’t get over the fact that the elfin-like Shana had such a powerful voice – and such a distinct one at that.
Clutching a pint and a bottle of Lucozade and – surprisingly for someone who lives in San Francisco – struggling with the heat like the rest of us, Shana put on a spell-binding, sultry, and spine-tingling show.
She fuses blues, country, soul, jazz, gospel and rock and the audience couldn’t get enough of songs such as Strong on You, Cherry On Top, Drive and Will The Circle Be Broken?
Her band were excellent and included Japanese blues guitarist, Saiichi Sugiyama, who also wowed Fletcher’s growing army of blues fans when he played the pub with his own group last month.
It was hot music for a hot summer night – and Shana was mobbed outside where she went to cool off after sets.
